As I love Minnesota, I primarily paint landscapes from here. Like many Minnesotans, I spent my summers camping on the North Shore and in Ely. These places became my home away from home. From skipping rocks, hunting for agates, roasting marshmallows over the fire, watching thunderstorms from inside my tent, playing card games and Scrabble, stargazing, and hiking, some of my favorite memories happened Up North. Deciding to focus the subject of my paintings on northern Minnesota landscapes is a no-brainer. Minnesota supplies endless beauty to celebrate through art.
After many years experimenting with various painting styles, I developed a style I call Textural Impressionism. Inspired by post-impressionism painters Van Gogh and Monet, this contemporary style incorporates impasto paint applied by both a pallet knife and paintbrush. Layering thick and short strokes of oil paint creates a spectrum of emotion. I hope to give my viewers a deeper appreciation for Minnesota’s great outdoors.
