  • Marjorie Wade
    Marjorie Wade
    Visual Artist: Pottery/Ceramics
Marjorie creates pottery for everyday use and embraces simplicity in each piece. Her work is inspired and influenced by the pottery and artifacts from primitive cultures, particularly those of Africa and prehistoric Japan. She finds it is by incorporating the textural elements and qualities from these traditions into her pottery that allows aspects of these cultures to be part of the world today. The nuances in the patterns and textures found in objects from these countries are essential to Marjorie’s work. She is also influenced by the Japanese folk tradition of Mingei, which honors the simple beauty in everyday objects made for daily use.

  • Mark Weersma
    Mark Weersma
    Visual Artist: Painting
I am attracted to color and typically use strong colors to produce a mind of glow in my paintings. My never-ending goal is to work on mastering “fooling the eye” through realism and three dimensional forms. With my landscapes, I try to make people feel like they are there and that they would really want to visit the place. I am constantly thinking of what would make great paintings when traveling to new places, experiencing nature in the national parks or even while I’m watching T.V. shows. Occasionally I will take a picture of a subject and just know right away that it will make a good painting. Along with the help of music, I can get lost in my work and hours can go by without me realizing it. An important part of my life would be missing if I didn’t create art.

My art tends to be whimsical scenes and images drawing from nature with an illustrative quality to it. I have traveled widely for inspiration, both to expand my imagination and to appreciate what is right in front of me. I especially like to work in gouache and ink. I have a BA in geology, a BS in education and have studied at the College of Visual Arts in the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I live and create in White Bear Lake, Minnesota.
  • Joshua Wilichowski
    Joshua Wilichowski
Visual Artist: Drawing Illustration; Visual Artist: Mixed Media; Visual Artist: Painting
My work results from the search for a chink in a man’s façade, the little respites that are accentuated by a burst of honesty.  These truths are often an inner commentary that contains personal affirmations, lamenting, failed goals, and miscued comebacks.  It is a clear glimpse of a man’s personal substance without the muddiness of overcompensation.  Albeit rare and fleeting, these truthful moments are used as a tool for coping with what is important. The exploration of this phenomenon has been in conjunction with what I consider to be machismo-related objects.  Even through these items are mass-produced, they each contain character through age, use, and presentation.  By juxtaposing these momentary truths against images of these parts and machines, I create allegories that document the search for identity and worth within the submission to a stereotype. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin –Madison with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998. I returned to Madison to earn both a Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts with an emphasis in sculpture and drawing in 2006 and 2007 respectively.  I maintain an active studio practice, and my work has been exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally.  My newest research interest investigates connections between gender, societal norms, and transference.  I currently live and work in Stillwater, MN.
  • LeAnn Wilkins
    LeAnn Wilkins
    Visual Artist: Painting
I aspire to be an artist because painting brings peace to my day.  My absolute favorite medium is watercolor.  I find it fascinating to work with because of its unpredictable nature.   I paint in an expressive manner; my method is more like carving with a brush in hand, layering and blocking in color to create a form and mood similar, but not identical, to what is in the photograph. Art is my therapy.  I live with chronic pain but refuse for pain to control my life. Like many circumstances in our lives, you can control watercolor only to a point. I can let the unpredictability of life consume my thoughts, or I can choose to go with the flow. As the paint flows across the page, I watch with anticipation.  I paint animals and nature because they make me happy.  When I focus on being calm, my mood is reflected in my work. I hope that when people view my art, they too will feel at peace and will be encouraged!
  • Todd Williams
    Todd Williams
Visual Artist: Woodworking; Visual Artist: Woodworking
Since retiring in 2006, Todd has followed his passion for woodturning. All his creations are hand turned on a lathe. He has taken instruction and training from many internationally known woodturners, including David Elsworth, Mark Gardiner, Cindy Drozda, Betty Scarpino, Liam O’Neill, Trent Bosch, and others. Todd has endeavored to master many different styles and forms, using almost entirely woods native to North America and harvested from trees downed by storms or development. “I believe one can achieve exciting colors and distinctive grain patterns using native woods, without encouraging harm to tropical rain forests.” Todd loves making bowls, lidded boxes, and items with tall and delicate finials. More recently, he has explored wooden jewelry and hollow forms. “I enjoy making pieces which are both useful and beautiful, but sometimes I am inspired to pure art, like my chalices and giant eggs.” Surface embellishment with woodburning or carving sometimes graces his pieces with emphasis on organic and natural designs. Todd is a long-time member of the Minnesota Woodturners Association, where he has won many “members choice” awards at monthly contests and served for ten years on the Board of Directors.  He is also a member of the American Association of Woodturners, and he has had two publications in “American Woodturner” magazine. He displays his work in a number of venues, including MWA meetings, American Crafts Council shows, the Phipps Center for the Arts, the Annual Carpenter Nature Center Art Fair in late summer, and on his website. He accepts commissions.
  • Melinda Wolff
    Melinda Wolff
Visual Artist: Painting; Visual Artist: Woodworking
I am continually inspired by the outdoors where I explore color, texture, shape, and whimsy of the world through my artwork. The paintings are a creative approach of oil painting on wood, inspired by nature to bring out the art of nature. Each painting highlights and accentuates the unique features of the wood including live edges, bark, worm holes, and wood grain, all of which guide the brushstrokes. The combination of my imagination with the natural wood elements seamlessly blend together in these paintings, leaving the viewer to ponder where the brushstrokes end and where nature begins. Environmental concerns are very important for my practice as a whole and I strive to use responsibly sourced and reclaimed materials in my work, bringing together my visual content and the material substance of my creations in support of a sustainable nature-friendly approach.
