One of American theatre’s best loved plays, A Streetcar Named Desire has been celebrated, studied and produced all over the world for nearly seventy years. From the dramatic artistry of Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire won Williams the Pulitzer Prize in 1948.
Centering around one of theatre’s most iconic women, Blanche DuBois, Streetcar provides a memorable set of circumstance and characters set against the dynamic backdrop of the seamy, steamy underbelly of 1940s life in the French Quarter of New Orleans. When the fading Southern belle pays an unexpected visit to her sister, Stella, and Stella’s brash husband, Stanley, Blanche must face some harsh realities, and come to terms with a life she struggles to accept.
A play full of intensely beautiful poetic images and clashing brutal coarseness, there is passion paired with disgust, old in conflict with new, brutality living within civilization. An examination of fantasy and reality, gender, truth and lies, A Streetcar Named Desire has left its mark on American drama, and will leave its mark on Festival’s 25th Anniversary Season.
