Heart of the River: Celebrating the First 50 Years of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway

Presented by The Phipps Center for the Arts and Wild Rivers Conservancy at The Phipps Center for the Arts

The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2018. This treasured national park, which includes the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers, was born in 1968 with the passage of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. The Riverway, with its clean water, wooded bluffs, abundant wildlife, and unique rock formations, was one of the original eight Wild & Scenic Rivers, and the only one to be named a national park.

This juried exhibition features work by artists in all media that expresses the significance of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway in their lives, and communicates that connection through unique depictions, interpretations, impressions, memories and hopes for the future. In addition to the juried exhibit, ‘Heart of the River” features photographs by Craig Blacklock, an interactive video game by Dave Beck, and a group exhibit of ceramic artists living in the St. Croix River Valley.

Opening reception:  Friday, September 14, 6-9 p.m.  Meet the artists, listen to bluegrass music, watch a film screening of “The Wild and Scenic St. Croix”, participate in hands-on activities, and enjoy hors d’oeuvres.

Galleries hours: Monday – Saturday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon – 4:30 p.m.; as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps Theaters.
