Beginning Digital Photography: Fall Colors

Beginning Digital Photography: Fall Colors

Presented by The Phipps Center for the Arts at The Phipps Center for the Arts

The goal of this class is for students to see their environment to yield photographs suitable for framing. Students will be encouraged to use their photographic equipment to its fullest, rather than rely on the “automatic” settings.*

Students will gain a basic understanding of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and how these elements can be used to create a balanced exposure. The instructor also will address depth of field and its role in composition through an examination of photographic subjects such as landscape, close-up (macro), sports, architecture, and patterns.  Assignments will be given at the end of each class, and this work will be reviewed at the beginning of the next class meeting.

*Note:  Students must have a basic knowledge of the menu operations of their camera and an ability to navigate simple operations such as adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO level to take this class. Because of the numerous camera brands and models, class time will not be used to show students how to use their specific camera. Students may hire the instructor for personal instruction by contacting him directly at 801.718.1906.

Instructor Bob Lyksett has worked as a news photographer for an ABC affiliate in Salt Lake City, freelance photographer, and photographic instructor for the Park City School District, Utah. He enjoys photographing sports of all kinds. His work was most recently published on the cover and accompanying the cover story of the national magazine Rodeo News. Lyksett also has contributed outdoor and nature photography to other publications.
