Afton State Park

The Brown’s Creek Watershed District (BCWD) is a special-purpose, local unit of government established in 1997 to prevent flooding and protect lakes and streams throughout the Brown’s Creek watershed. The district covers 30 square miles of land, including portions of Grant, Hugo, Lake Elmo, May Twp., Oak Park Heights, Stillwater and Stillwater Township. In addition to completing dozens of flood-prevention and water-improvement projects over the years, BCWD implements rules to guide new development. The watershed drains to Brown’s Creek, a designated trout stream, which flows to the St. Croix River.

Interstate Park - Wisconsin

WI Interstate Park is known worldwide for its glacial potholes. It’s also one end of the 1,200 mile National Ice Age Trail. It offers beautiful views from bluffs along the St. Croix River, swimming/ fishing/ canoeing at Lake O’ the Dalles, family nature programs, and has over 9 miles worth of hiking trails (as well as ski & snowshoe in the winter). A Visitor Center provides an auditorium, exhibits and a gift shop.

There is so much to do at Interstate State Park, located on the beautiful St. Croix River. Visitors can climb the cliffs of the St. Croix River Dalles, canoe the flat-water, watch kayakers rush through the rapids, or relax on an excursion boat. Spring brings a great diversity of wildflowers and in fall, the St. Croix River Valley forest is ablaze in the autumn colors of red, gold, and orange. The geology that formed this park intrigues visitors, and brings geologists from all over the world. At least 10 different lava flows are exposed in the park, along with two distinct glacial deposits, and traces of old streams valleys and faults. During the summer, hike the trails and explore the glacial potholes that make this park unique.

LeDuc Historic Estate

The LeDuc Historic Estate is a nationally significant historic property that includes an architecturally outstanding house, preserved outbuildings, and beautiful 4-acre grounds with gardens and woods. The unaltered Gothic Revival mansion was built by William G. LeDuc, Civil War veteran and former Commissioner of Agriculture for President Rutherford Hayes. His wife, Mrs. Mary LeDuc, selected the design for the house from the works of noted landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing and the house was constructed from 1862 to 1866. In 1970 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places; it opened as a historic house museum in 2005. Today, a wide range of exciting and educational arts and cultural heritage programming is offered for people of all ages. Guided tours of the Estate are available the end of May through the end of October. The Estate is also available for private rentals, group tours, and events year-round.

St. Croix National Scenic Riverway

Government

St. Croix National Scenic Riverway was established in 1968 as a unit of the National Park Service and expanded in 1972 to include the River below Highway 8. The Riverway’s focus is on preserving the natural environment that supports the St. Croix River, which provides habitat for wildlife and recreational opportunities. In addition to providing recreational access the Riverway presents activites to educate and enhance appreciation of the St. Croix River, it’s place in history, and the natural world of which it is a part. The Riverway Headquarters and St. Croix River Visitor Center is at 401 Hamilton St in St. Croix Falls, WI. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service St. Croix WMD

The St. Croix Wetland Management District is located in eight counties in west central Wisconsin. The district was established in 1992 with the goal of providing wetland and grassland habitat for breeding waterfowl. Lying along the eastern edge of the tallgrass prairie in west-central Wisconsin, the St. Croix Wetland Management District encompasses a fascinating diversity of habitats. Within the eight-county district, one can travel north through the high river bluffs of Pepin County, to the prairie potholes of St. Croix County, and then to the pine barrens of Burnett County. Waterfowl production areas were created by an amendment to the Federal Duck Stamp Act in 1958. Scientists realized that these small pockets of habitat were vital to breeding waterfowl. This amendment gave the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service permission purchase small wetlands. Your purchase of a Federal Duck Stamp provides funds to acquire, oversee and manage waterfowl production areas and easements. Visitors are welcome to stop by the district officelocated about two miles west of New Richmond, ¼ mile south of State Highway 64. The office is open Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Washington County Historic Courthouse

The Washington County Historic Courthouse welcomes local, national, and international visitors for meetings, exhibits, free guided tours, performances, private and public events. The building stands high on the bluffs, overlooking downtown Stillwater and the St. Croix River Valley. The Greek Revival buildng features Italianate influences and is visible from throughout the valley. The Historic Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is an important cultural, economic and historical resource for the St. Croix Valley. Charles Nelson, former state architect noted that “The Historic Courthouse is considered one of the best examples of adaptive re-use of an historic site in the Midwest.”

Wild River State Park

Wild River State Park is located along 18 miles of the beautiful St. Croix River. The park attracts people who enjoy camping, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, interpretive programs, self-guided trails, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Day visitors can enjoy a leisurely paddle down the St. Croix River from the Sunrise river access to the southern park river access. The park provides opportunities for semi-modern camping, group camping, equestrian camping, backpack camping, and canoe camping. Visitors who want modern amenities can reserve the guest house which provides a living room, dining room, kitchen, and fireplace. The park also has six camping cabins which include bunkbeds, a table, and benches. An all-season trail center is a great spot to relax after hiking or cross-country skiing on the 35-mile trail system. A visitor center with exhibits and environmental education programs is open year-round.
