  • Tim Bruckner
    Tim Bruckner
    Visual Artist: Sculpture
Tim Bruckner’s earliest memory of sculpting was when he was seven. He sculpted little heads of the Seven Dwarves out of wax tubes a disgustingly sweet liquid candy was packaged in. From the very beginning, he was a wax sculptor.  He uses a different kind of wax now and stays away from sweets, for the most part. He started working professionally at 18 as a jeweler’s apprentice/wax carver. He sculpted several hundred wildlife waxes that became rings, pendants, broaches and belt buckles. It was the single most valuable experience of his professional life. In those two years he learned the foundation of his art that would sustain him for over forty years. After leaving the jewelry racket, he found a very patient and sympathetic agent and started working as a freelancer. His first free lance job was for Max Factor, sculpting a menagerie of fanciful animals and decorative objects.  From there he sculpted two alligator suits for the movies Joe Panther and Alligator. He did a handful of album covers for various artists; Ray Charles, Ringo Starr, The Average White Band, George Clinton and Parliament and a dust jacket for Cat Stevens. He stepped away from sculpting for a while to pursue a music career. When common sense returned in the form, shape and substance of his amazing wife, Mary, he went back to sculpture with a vengeance. A partial client list (partial because he can’t remember all the crap he made and for whom he made it.) includes: DC Direct, Mattel, Kenner, Hasbro, Toy Biz, Bowen Designs, Sideshow, Gentle Giant, Electric Tiki, Reel Arts, Enesco, Dakin, The Hamilton Group, Hallmark, Applause, American Greetings, Department 56, Ashton Drake, Franklin Mint, Geometric, Graham Nash, Harry Nilsson and the Danbury Mint. He was under contract to DC Direct for a while and worked almost exclusively for them for almost a dozen years. One of his most gratifying professional experiences was designing and sculpting the DC Dynamics line based on the art of J. C. Leyendecker. In 2010, he co-authored Pop Sculpture, how to create collectible statues and action figures published by Watson/Guptill. His Ode to Joy, a bust of Beethoven caught mid- chuckle, is among the featured images of the great man in a book published last year by Bildersammlung Museum Beethoven-Haus, Bonn, Germany. Now retired from commercial work, he focuses on commission and personal work. Big howdy to Errol and Anne. Two of the most amazing people he’s ever met.
  • Guillermo Cuellar
    Guillermo Cuellar
    Visual Artist: Sculpture
I was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1951 and studied ceramics at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, where I fell in love with the potter’s wheel and the unpretentious beauty of old pots. After working as an environmentalist I returned to pottery in 1980. With the certainty of youth I embraced the notion that pursuing the life of an artist potter was possible and would lead to a better society. In 1986 I set up a studio in the village of Turgua, an hour southeast of the capital city, Caracas, where I made pots for the following 18 years. Traveling in Venezuela, I came across the baskets, pots, weaving, and woodwork of native Indian people. Seeing their beautiful folk art in its context in daily use was an epiphany. It was not only the handwork I loved but the capacity of these pieces to transcend their function and bring people together; to be vessels of the group’s identity. The way the Indians relate to their art, not at a distance but keeping it close at hand, remains an ideal to me. In that spirit, my pots are made for use, for preparing and sharing food. I want them to be accessible, not confined to a formal setting or behind glass. Beautiful handmade objects should be a part of our daily lives, often in use in our hands. In 1992 a group of my Venezuelan potter friends came together to found Grupo Turgua, a non-profit association of artisans dedicated to the support of good craft in Venezuela. From 1992 to 2005 Grupo Turgua hosted twenty-eight group sales at the Turgua studio, offering pottery, jewelry, photography, woodwork, drawing, weavings, Venezuelan native crafts and other creative work. In 2005 my wife, Laurie, our children and I moved back to the USA and established a home, studio and showroom in the upper St. Croix River valley near Shafer, Minnesota, where I am currently making pots. In 2008 I was invited to participate as one of seven host studios on the Minnesota Potters of the Upper St. Croix Valley Annual Pottery Tour.

You’ve been ogling Jane’s Fine Silver Shotglasses for Poker Players, haven’t you? Great! Because Jane truly had a blast spending several days creating these pieces. Start each one by sawing an arc out of a flat sheet of fine silver; hammer it over a blowhorn stake to form the vessel wall; create the card suit design in the base with hammers, embossing and liner punches and a bowl of warm pine pitch (smells like a lovely pine forest!); then finally solder the base to the vessel with a hot propane torch. Can you believe Jane used to wear a paramedic uniform and served 18 years in emergency medicine? Even harder to believe is that she spent more than a decade wearing suits, pantyhose and high heels as a news reporter and corporate PR writer. So. Much. Better. Spending the day in jeans and a shop apron in her own studio! You also can find Jane’s handmade jewelry and metal art the Stillwater Art Guild Gallery, where she is a member artist and one of the owners. It’s Jane! LLC handmade jewelry and metal gifts can be found on display daily at the Stillwater Art Guild Gallery, 402 North Main Street, Stillwater, MN, in the historic Isaac Staples Sawmill building. The Art Guild Gallery is a cooperative of about 65 artists and is staffed 7 days a week by volunteers. Jane became one of the six owners of the not-for-profit gallery in early 2012.

My path to becoming a potter began by chance at Bemidji State University in 1996. Over the years, the people and relationships that I have experienced through clay have echoed similar thoughts. I think it is the maleable nature of clay that has the ability to capture your entire being with one squeeze. At least, it did that to me. My primary intention is to have fun while making pots. I enjoy making pottery shapes that wander between comfortable and uncontrolled ideas. Thick, twisted, cut, cubed, animated, animals, dunked, dented, squeezed, and scraped are words that describe my pottery making process. All of the pottery is coated with rich slips and a palette of soft  toned glazes. My studio is located at our home in Shafer, Minnesota. Annually I sell my pots at local galleries, farmers markets, studio tours, art fairs, and home sales.

Storyteller; Visual Artist: Mixed Media; Visual Artist: Sculpture
Myths skillfully weave words to create worlds to answer the questions of life. Like myths, I want my art to not only answer questions but to also create questions. Stories seep and soak into my art. Little snippets of the world and small moments of my life, traveling from memories to the art I create. Carrying the genetic code of my Mom, I have received the artist gift that travelled through the many artist generations of her family to me. The journey of my life and theirs has informed the art I create. I want to sculpt tangible pieces of stories that transcend my life and touch a memory, feeling or story that we might share together. My art pieces are proof of the process I undertake in the creation.

For more than 30 years I have been developing my artistic interpretation through sculpture. Whether sculpting a commercial commission or a fine art sculpture, I always push the limits of my knowledge and skill. I take great inspiration from 19th century sculpture, especially Art Nouveau. Creating a sculpture with movement and life adds to the unique execution of each of my pieces. Through my quest to gain knowledge, I have benefited from learning from the best sculptors, through teachers and studying what the great masters have done before, such as Daniel Chester French, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Jean-Baptiste Carpeau. My foundry background adds to my wealth of knowledge. I understand how to execute a sculpture so that it can be cast to its highest potential. Understanding all aspects of the process is of benefit to the outcome of any project I take on from the start, design development to delivery of a beautifully executed sculpture. My long history of working with a variety of clients, building lasting relationships is a testament to my skill and reliability. I’ve been fortunate to be recognized for numerous distinctions and awards. Despite this I continue to strive to push every piece to a new level of development. It has taken me 30 years to get to where I am, I look forward to seeing what I can create in the next 30 years.

  • Gabrielle Trom
    Gabrielle Trom
Teacher / Instructor; Visual Artist: Drawing Illustration; Visual Artist: Painting; Visual Artist: Sculpture
Gabrielle Trom is currently in the United States and preparing for her upcoming residency at Chesterwood in 2021. Please visit her website www.gabrielletrom.com for information about commissions. Artist Statement “The beauty of art is the window it opens in our minds. Representational art is an interpretation of the world around us. If we wanted to merely create a copy of what we see we would snap a quick photo instead of making a painting or we would make a life-cast instead of sculpting a figure. When we interpret the world and we see or experience the interpretations of others, we create bridges with which to learn about ourselves and one another.” – Gabrielle Trom Gabrielle Trom was raised in the beautiful Midwest in the United States of America. Trom began formal training in watercolors at the Art Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2008 and went on to continue her studies of drawing, painting, and sculpture at Bethel University. There, Trom was introduced to a variety of artistic mediums and basic concepts of design. In 2016, she left the States and headed across the Atlantic to begin her education in the academic methods of figurative drawing and sculpture at the Barcelona Academy of Art. She added oil painting to her studies at the academy in 2018 and, after she was granted a scholarship from the Art Renewal Center, was able to return to Barcelona to complete her sculpture studies in 2019. In June 2019, Trom won first place in the Richard McDermott Miller competition—a timed portrait sculpting competition held annually by the National Sculpture Society in the United States of America. Trom returned to Spain to teach sculpture at the Barcelona Academy of Art and to commence work on her first personal project. She began working on her first personal projects and competed in the National Sculpture Society’s first Dexter Jones Residency Competition. Trom won the competition, however, due to COVID-19 the residency was moved to 2021. Shortly after, circumstances involving COVID-19 caused her to move back to the United States. Trom moved to Stillwater, Minnesota and has most recently found a space to work in Studio Pintura at the Northrup King Building to practice sculpting and begin preparations for her projects at Chesterwood.
