When does a beginning begin and an ending end? At what point does an ending become a beginning? My work explores this in-between space where identity is constantly shifting and all that seemed certain loses form. Intellectually we like buckets, divisions, distinctions – yet the universe reveals our dualities a folly. For many of us, life and death seem to be separate dualities. Deeper inquiry reveals the separation of life and death as a human construct. Each of us is living and dying simultaneously; 300 million cells die every minute in our bodies even as we generate 200 billion new cells each day. We start dying the minute we are born. Where does each of us begin and end? Are the drops of water in the ocean distinct? In my work I explore individuality within a united oneness, and the continuum of beginnings and endings. Although my diptychs present two distinct images – presence and absence, beginning and end –they transcend “either/or” to convey “and/both.” The line that appears in much of my work represents the thread that connects us all and theunique strand that we are or the distinct mark we make in the world.

I find inspiration from my surroundings. I create imagery from vignettes around my home, still lifes, or views from my surrounding landscape. I work in oil paint, watercolor, and printmaking. I am interested in color harmonies, how light is captured on form, and the quality of line and edges. In my work, rather than documenting a single moment in time, I strive to capture the layers that exist when remembering a room, an object, or a landscape. An experience akin to finding a photograph after a long period of time, reading a page from a childhood journal, or smelling something that reminds you of a vacation. Rarely, would a single image come to mind in these instances, but rather a layered memory of images, feelings, and backstory. To support this, I have elements in my work that capture my in-the-moment decision making and process. Such as pencil markings or areas of transparency that showcase previous layers of work – marks that act as record keeping of the life of the painting.

I look to my gardens for endless and awesome inspiration. These images are expressed through an Intaglio printmaking technique called Mezzotint. My process begins with creating a rough surface across a copper plate. Using drawing tools (burnishers & scrapers), the plate is hand carved to reveal a particular image. The plate is inked, wiped and passed through a press transferring the ink onto a piece of German Etching paper. Color inks are applied by hand before each run of the press. The mezzotint technique proves to be rewarding as well as challenging. Manipulating a plate to bring an idea to surface is a completely fulfilling and creative artistic experience. I have  BFA in Printmaking from Indiana University. and have worked under master printers Brian Jones, Carol Wax, and Rosalie Bernardi.

Originally from Chicago, I now live in Franconia Township, MN, where the beauty of the St. Croix River Valley has long inspired my work. I spent 31 years working at the Hazelden Foundation, where I was the art director of the book publishing division. I now enjoy working independently in my home studio, splitting my time between creating books (writing, illustrating, designing) and intaglio printmaking. I also work and exhibit with Project Art for Nature, an artist group that is a perfect fit for my artistic vision. My goal as an artist is to be a voice for the healing power in the beauty of our natural world by creating art that helps people to connect with this world in whatever environment they live. This connection is available to all of us when we learn to focus on the world as it is under our feet, right in front of our eyes. Whether drawing in pencil, ink or making etchings, my work has always involved print, either through books or intaglio printmaking. The common thread is that art for books and art as printmaking both involve drawing at the heart of the matter, and both involve art that is to be shared.
